Chapter 5.9: Rescue Mission

 <-- Previous Chapter

From Venus's diary

Cassy: Any news?
Luke: The TV news is talking about it since yesterday night, but they haven't reported any possible explanation yet. They appeared out of nowhere just above New Sixam, took fifteen different people, and haven't been seen since.
Misty: I've tried to call some of my old colleagues, but even those in the army and in the secret services seem to be as clueless as we are...

TV:... "No new abductions were reported in the last sixteen hours, suggesting that the few abductions recorded yesterday night may have been isolated episodes. All the signalled cases happened within the New Sixam borders, while the other Nations are potentiating their aerial defences as a precaution. During her speech, the President..."

Venus: ...

We've all been trying to find an explanation for what happened all night long, but it's something so absurd that we don't even know what to do. Those old spaceships hadn't been used by anyone for decades now and abductions seemed to belong to a distant past, so what happened a few hours ago was like a bolt from the blue for all of New Sixam.

Steve was just there, by my side, it seemed like the best day of our lives. And instead at that moment I didn't even know where he was, if he was injured or not, or if he even was still...

Cassy: By putting together the data from the satellites and the radars, sooner or later someone will find the information we need. There is no aircraft that is invisible to every detection device, it's just a matter of time.

Cassy hadn't given up yet, she continued to formulate hypotheses and try to find a sensible explanation for that kidnapping. She was right, it was not the time to give up, but what could we do, other than waiting?

Cassy: I don't think you should worry, even back in the days abducted people were always returned to their families, eventually. I'm sure Steve is fine, we just need to understand who took him!
Venus: ...

Cassy: You know what? I'm going to the space command center now, I want to see the satellite recordings collected last night by myself! At least one of the sensors must have measured something, isn't it? Would you like to come as well?

If there's one thing my sister and I have in common, it's that neither of us is good at sitting still and waiting. We don't know if our work will be of any use, but this will not be enough to convince us to stand here and do nothing!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Cassy's diary

Venus and I spent all day at the space command centre, we've both registered there as new astronaut recruits since our graduation. We have been told that our first tasks will consist of short space trips to collect raw materials from the main asteroid belt of the Solar System. New Sixam is incredibly resource-poor, so mining minerals in space seemed like the obvious choice for our Nation.

Today, however, we focused on something entirely different, just like the rest of the centre: we checked every single line registered in the last 12 hours by any satellite put in orbit by New Sixam. It was exhausting work, especially if you add it to a completely sleepless night, but what else could we do?

Worried or not, at that point all we wanted was to fall asleep. Even so, we couldn't avoid to keep reasoning aloud on the (scarce) findings of the day even after putting on our sleepwear and sitting on the well-desired bed.

Cassy: It's so weird, the satellites have recorded five spaceships completely identical to those used during the very first phases of the Earth colonization plan, they seemed so old to make me wonder how is it possible they didn't break down on the way...
Venus: Even the trajectories seemed so off... But how did we manage to lose sight of them soon after they left the Earth's atmosphere, then? They could be anywhere by now...

I felt so tired I felt like I could have fallen asleep at any moment, yet I still couldn't stop looking for a solution. I felt like when all the pieces of the puzzle are already available, and it was so frustrating not being able to put them back in place!

Unless...

Everyone knows that those shuttles have an AI that automatically uses teleportation for distances greater than 10,000 km, this had been the secret behind the space exploration carried out by our ancestors since ever. So, everyone just assumed that those spaceships had surely teleported towards who knows where the moment they disappeared from our records, I gave it for granted all day long as well. However...

Cassy: (thoughtfully) Actually, how can we be so sure they really used teleportation? Thinking about it, there weren't many of the usual ripples in the signal the moment we lost them, either. And, if they haven't teleported, they can't have gone too far, can they?
Venus: (perplexed) ... Well, no.

No, they couldn't have gone very far. And the idea I had in mind suddenly gave me a rush of energy, it wasn't time to go to sleep yet!

Venus: (exhausted) What are we doing here?
Cassy: There's only one place close enough to the place the spaceships have disappeared to be reached without teleporting, and I have half a clue how to get there.
Venus: Wait, you don't want to take the old rocket from the school project, do you!?
Cassy: Why not, it's a trip we've already tried during the tests!

Venus had thought about it for a few more moments, before leaping to her feet and running towards the rocket. There was no time to waste, not even to request official permission at the space centre, and logic told us that the place Steve was most likely to be at the moment was just around the corner, in the distance scale of the universe...

-----------------------------------------------------------

From Venus's diary

I don't know how Cassy managed to be the first to have that idea, looking back now it seemed like such an obvious solution... The closest hiding place to Earth had been right in front of us all night, what could it be if not the Moon?

Or, to be more precise, a cave right under its surface. Our sonars took a while to locate it, and the radio signal receivers cleared all our doubts. Someone was hiding right down there, it was clear at that point.

Cassy: (impressed) What a surprise, why didn't anyone report about such a place just under the Moon's surface before?
Venus: Um...

There was no time to waste, we had to search around as quickly as possible. At that point Steve had been abducted for more than a day, who knows what could have happened to him...

So we decided to split, to be able to check on a larger area in half the time.

Cassy: (relieved) Steve, you're fine!

Steve: Cassy! You don't know how happy I am to see you!

Meanwhile Cassy had already warned me via radio, I was so relieved that it didn't even seem real to see him like this again, in one piece!

Steve looked relieved to see us there with him, but I could still feel how frightened he must have been after the abduction. What had happened to him? Who did this? And...

Steve: We'd better get out of here quickly, before those weirdos show up again.
Cassy: Ok, let's also put together the other guys who have been abducted and...
Venus: Wait, who are those weirdoes you were talk...

???: Who are you? Where did you come from?

Steve: (scared ) Well, it's them, they are the ones who abducted us!

I hadn't gone all that far to let a couple of weird-headed guys stop me, and Cassy seemed to feel the same way. So we didn't think twice before neutralizing them:

? ?: Wait for a s...

Cassy: Well, we should be able to transport them to the space centre without problems now... They'll have a lot to explain to us, that's for sure.

Meanwhile, attracted by the hustle and bustle, the other abducted people had also joined us. They were just waiting to get home, and we didn't know how many more of those weirdos might be around. We then guided them to our rocket, while the two "frozen prisoners" ended up in the cargo unit.

Normally I would never have agreed to trap someone like that to hand them over to the authorities, but these two have just too much to explain…

---------------------------------------------------------

§HermioneSims§ corner:

Well, in comparison with the last few chapters, this one was definitively funnier to play and write :P

We found out already where Steve was and how he's doing, yet the chapter could have closed with more questions than answers: who are those guys? Where are they from? What do they want?

There will be a lot to cover in the next few chapters, that's for sure...

Chapter 5.8: The wedding

 <-- Previous Chapter

From Cassy's diary

After graduation, both Venus and I returned back home with mom and dad. I think I'll stay there for a while, I don't have any clear plans in mind. After all, now that teleport devices are present in every house I don't care much about the place where I live, I can do my new and fantastic job as an astronaut from there like anywhere else in New Sixam.

My sister, on the other hand, is already excited about the idea of marrying Steve and going to live with him, she hardly talks about anything else now.

On the way home we also saw little Taz again, over time he has become so calm that he seems almost unrecognizable. Dad decided to bring him to the vet soon later, he looked quite ill to be honest.

Luke: That cone makes you resemble a table lamp, you know?
Taz: Woof!

Back in the days, he used to prefer going out for a walk with either Mum or Venus, who love to jog around the neighbourhood with him. Now he's starting to prefer slower walks with me or with Dad instead.

We all realised that our beloved little dog was becoming very old, so we can't really say we were surprised the day he passed away. That didn't make the news any easier to digest though, we're all going to miss our little fur ball...

--------------------------------------------

A few weeks later, from Venus' diary

Planning a wedding is a real grind. People say this often, but it's hard to realize how true it is until you've tried it in person. Despite everything, both Steve and I have every intention of getting married as soon as possible and moving in together.

As soon as they heard of the wedding, Aunt Lyra and Uncle Nick just couldn't avoid proclaiming themselves as organizers of the event. That's why I'm here more often than I've ever seen them before, they really like this kind of thing...

Nick: Lyra has just finished designing some trendy clothes, you'd end up in magazines!
Venus: Well, actually we were thinking of something more traditional... I mean, I'm sure that aunt's collection is very nice, but...
Lyra: You really remind Luke when you talk like that, you know?
Venus: C'mon, I didn't feel like I was grumbling so much!

---------------------------------------------------
From Venus's diary

Cassy: I honestly don't understand why are you spending so much time and money on a big wedding, wouldn't it be easier if you just moved out together to a new house?
Venus: Well...
Cassy: Soon we're starting to work too, that's going to take a ton of time as well!
Venus: Maybe it won't seem logical, but sometimes it's nice to fantasise a bit about this kind of romantic stuff... It's the kind of memory that lasts forever, you know?

Cassy answered me with the same look she would have given me if I had told her I was going to drop everything to go unicorn hunting in the Himalayas. But Steve and I have so much to celebrate with this wedding, and we want to share all of this with our families and all the other people close to us. This is mostly why we want to organize a good ceremony, we want to make sure that everyone can have fun and that they can remember this day for quite a while!

Cassy: Anyway, you got distracted again. Checkmate!
Venus: Not again!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

From Venus' diary

So the wedding day arrived. According to Aunt Lyra, the list of things which went wrong was getting longer and longer every second, but neither Steve nor I cared much about the exact diameter of the cake or the shade of turquoise of the flowers. All the people who mattered most to us were there, and that was enough for us.

Steve: You look great!
Venus: It was a lot of work, but in the end I convinced the aunt to give us normal dresses, isn't it great?
Steve: I've seen a bit of the brochures she sent me, but I never understood where the jacket started, and where the pants did...

Cassy: Both you and dad seem almost happier than Venus is, I've never seen the two of you smiling so much!
Misty: (nostalgic) Well, when we arrived here in New Sixam everything was very different from now, we had to make many sacrifices to ensure that both you and Venus could do everything you needed. And now you've graduated, are about to start your dream job, and Venus is getting married today too! Of course we're very happy for you both, and very proud too!

And then the moment of the exchange of promises and wedding rings arrived. Both Steve and I were as excited as rarely in the past, even our hands were shaking a bit. But that trembling wasn't dictated by fear, far from it.

At that moment we felt more ready than ever to embark on our life together!

Venus: The cake is delicious! Strange, because...
Steve: C'mon, is your aunt also complaining about this fantastic cake?

And then we just started laughing. Could this day be any more perfect than this?

---------------------------------------------------------------------
From Cassy's diary

Cassy: Oh, hi Serena!
Serena: Hello to you too!

After all the effort dad and Mrs Serena put into making the truth of New Sixam known to people who live in other countries, the situation timidly started to ease up. Many have started business relationships with us, they sell us the raw materials we lack and we sell them some of our inventions. So seeing a few humans visiting New Sixam is no longer a novelty, and a few thousand of them have started moving in here permanently. Among them is the family of Mrs Serena, who seemed to be waiting for nothing more than an opportunity to study our country and society from the inside.

Cassy: How are you doing here in New Sixam?
Serena: I'm glad to live again next to Misty, Lyra, Ariana and the others, and Luke too... I almost feel like being back in my high school years, it's incredible to think that more than fifty years have already passed instead...
Cassy: From what dad told us, it would seem like the situation has changed a lot, in the meanwhile.
Serena: Oh, you don't know how much!

It's always very interesting to talk with her, she always tells stories about some small country or culture I'd never heard about before. Often it feels almost like she's talking about some far alien place, and not about other spots on our same planet. It's quite fascinating to think about it, about how two places so close in space could be so different in many other ways...
----------------------------------------------------------------

From Venus's diary

Luke: Congratulations, Venus!

Luke: I'm so happy for you, it has been an incredible day!

Venus: the whole town can see it, you're glowing so much!
Luke: Just like you.

Dad is a great author who filled his books with millions of words. However, he's never been a great speaker, especially when it came to expressing what he felt. But, sometimes, a hug is worth a thousand words.

The party went on well into the night, and we all enjoyed ourselves until we couldn't stand and dance any longer. I don't think anyone among the guests could forget a day like this so easily!

But, among all the rest, what we'll really struggle to forget is what happened soon later...

We had all decided to spend the night at mum and dad's house, after all it was very late and it was just a few steps away from the place where we hold the ceremony.

We were chatting a bit before saying to each other goodnight, when something no one heard of for decades suddenly happened...

A mysterious spaceship appeared out of the blue right above our house and took Steve away! We were all too stunned to react, who could it have been? But above all, what would have happened to Steve?

----------------------------------------------------

§HermioneSims§ corner
Please ignore Taz in the penultimate picture, I changed the order of events a bit to make the story flow better and close with this moment of suspense.

I wrote at some point that unexpected alien abductions were some of the in-game events which made me struggle the most when trying to build a plot that made sense, and this one is one of the worst examples of this.
On the one hand, I was glad to have a new turning point to work with, Venus's wedding was giving me diabetes-vibes, but how can I justify an alien abduction at this point in the story?

The next few chapters will for sure be filled with new revelations, that's for sure...

Chapter 5.7: Graduations

 <-- Previous Chapter

From Cassy's diary

The last months of our last semester in college were really chaotic, we had to work hard every (and sometimes even at night) just to have everything done in time.

It was a real grind, but our degrees were so close to make it impossible to lose sight of our goal, we were more determined than ever!

And then the day came, after so much studying it seemed impossible it really was over!

The three of us graduated with honours, and are now ready to move on with our lives! There are so many different possibilities awaiting me, I know that I will do everything possible to become an astronaut with Venus but for the rest I have not yet decided which path to take. I have the impression that I will miss university a lot, but the real discoveries awaiting to be made seem to be somewhere else, after all...

On the other hand, a certain someone else seems to have much clearer ideas than me about what they want for their future instead...

From Venus's diary

In recent months we've done nothing but study like crazy, focusing on our graduations, and today that we've really got there, I can't help but think that everything seems perfect. We are all here together to celebrate the successes of the past years, but it's impossible not to think that this will be our last day here at the campus, all together.

Venus: Congratulations!
Steve: Congratulations to you too!

Steve and I had never seriously discussed what to do after graduation, there were a myriad of open roads in front of us.

But what we were sure of was that, whatever path we decided to take, we would have done it together.

Steve: Would you marry me?

We still didn't know where we were going to live or what we were going to do, but we had all the time in the world to think about it. At that moment, all I wanted to tell him was:

Venus: Of course I do!

And so we had arrived at the last night on campus, including our last soccer match and the last juice-pong game.

Venus: Are you ready for the last game of the year?

Many things have happened and changed during our years in college. I'm sure Cassy would start listing all the things we learned in class until this point, but I think what made us grow the most were all those other things we've experienced over these years.

We certainly won't forget these years easily, but the time has come to look forward!

As you can see, the college years weren't too eventful for Cassy and Venus at the end. I find this part of the game quite demanding game-wise, so I didn't have much time for developing complex parallel subplots and these last few chapters were a bit linear and predictable for my tastes. But from now on I won't have lectures, exams and assignments to worry about anymore, and the matter will change quite a lot...

Because this is when my brain returned back to the old and good:
