Chapter 4.9: The crashed airplane

 <-- Previous Chapter

From Luke's diary

Little Taz grew up quickly, although he maintained his small in size. Rumours say that cats much larger cats than him used to live with my family in the past, actually.

As small as he is, he still demonstrates an energy and a desire to run out of the ordinary. Misty often takes him for a jog with her, and as much as he is forced to move his paws at an unimaginable speed, he always manages to keep up with her pace.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Misty: Hey Luke, but did you know that Lyra is getting married?
Luke: What? Who told you that?
Misty: She posted about it on Simstagram, look here!

Saying so, Misty handed me her cell phone to show me the latest photos posted by my sister.

I knew that Lyra aimed to become a style icon on social media, she now posts about everything she does on those platforms, but I still think she could have told us in person too...

So, a few weeks later we found ourselves all dressed up at the hottest club in town, where Lyra and Nick had organized a fancy wedding with the sunset in the background. The more time passed, the more we became convinced that they wanted to use the event to advertise the latest clothes she had designed. Nonetheless, the emotion of both was more than evident.

Lyra: Hi Sammy! Be careful not to leave footprints on my dress, c'mon...

My sister Lyra and I could not be the closest siblings in town, but still there are times when not even I can deny she has style.

Lyra: Hey, but that's the dress I gave you last month! It looks great on you, Cami!
Camille: You look great too, but, ehm... How can it stay in place?
Lyra: The seamstresses who work with me are really good at their job! And there there is a bit of glue, of course.
Camille: I see...

Lyra: hey, are you still sure about not getting married? Dressing up Luke would take some, uh... work, but you would look great in any of my clothes!
Misty: Thanks for the offer, but we want to save the money to be able to send the girls to university. If they want to, of course.
Lyra: How boring... You should also have some fun every now and then, you know?

Lyra: C'mon, at least let's take a selfie!
Misty: Okay, why not.

Venus: Hi uncle! Why do you have normal hair today?
Nick: (laughing) At least for today I wanted to change a little.

Lyra: Nick, that's the perfect background for a picture!
Nick: Oooookay!

Maybe those two are a bit weird sometimes, but they seem to get along both in their private and work live, at least.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The next week, following the increasingly insistent requests of the people visiting the library, we organized the first public reading event. To this day no one knows that their grumpy librarian is actually the hand behind the pen name of Lucas Mills, author of the books on the sixamians' history and best sellers all over New Sixam, so I have to be extremely careful to ensure no one could even just suspect about my true identity while I read excerpts from my last book.

Luke: The history of sixamians is complex and full of contradictions. Our ancestors soon learned to travel in space, gaining the rare opportunity to explore the length and breadth of the galaxy. They travelled in search of resources, those same resources that were increasingly scarce on their home planet, but also to quench their thirst for knowledge.

Luke: They had very different values from ours. Their choices were based purely on cold logic, and they only aimed to ensure the maximum prosperity for their species. They thus decided to subtly infiltrate into planets such as the Earth, aiming at the progressive replacement of pre-existing species. You have surely heard about that period and the alien abductions that characterized it, because similar inconceivable events are part of the history of the families of us all.

Luke: However, they did not limit themselves to replacing the pre-existing populations, they decided instead to inbreed with them. They acted this way to ensure the best chances of survival to their descendants remaining on this planet, ignoring completely aspects of our inner beings which now we know to be crucial.
In fact, we did not limit ourselves to inheriting the typical physiognomy of human beings, made up of a head, two arms and two legs: humans also passed on their values and feelings to us. And this radical change in our way of thinking, which took place within a few generations, is the source of all the contradictions that followed...

???: And maybe now you want to tell us that we should get along with humans, that we are all siblings, bah... But who wrote all this good-natured nonsense? We have been living on our own here in New Sixam for nearly fifteen years now, and both us and they are much happier than we have ever been!
Luke: (trying to stay calm) This is an opinion like any other, which I personally don't share.

Silently, Misty followed the scene from the back of the library. Now her job was to locate any spies in New Sixam, and the first step in keeping an eye on people showing any suspicious behaviour. That guy had clearly stated that humans were also enjoying their lives now that we left, but how did he know what humans think without having any contact with them?

Misty: Hey dude, what's the problem?
???: I'm angry about that stupid book, it is filling everyone's heads with such do-good nonsense!

Misty: C'mon, there is no need to get mad for so little, do you agree? It's just a book, after all.

Luke: Anything interesting?
Misty: Uhm, the signal is a bit perturbed, but they seem to be talking about an airplane...
Luke: For sure it would attract attention, since when we started to use teleport for everything in here nobody uses any kind of flying aircraft whatsoever.
Misty: Indeed, and if someone tried to enter from the outside it would probably be blocked by the external force field. By checking the radar records, actually...
Luke: Actually what?
Misty: Apparently there was an anomaly in the force fields a few weeks ago, just north of here. Could it ever be that...

Misty: This wasn't there until a week ago, that's for sure...

  1. I wonder what the airplane signals. Suspenseful end to the chapter. :) I thought Luke's reading was a great idea and that it would be educational... but I suppose it's controversial as well. Also, I'm glad to see Nacho still around in some form.

    1. Thanks a lot for all the comments! Nacho became the invisible mascotte of this story by now... While Luke and Misty have definitively a lot of things to think about, controversies at the library were already quite harsh but now there is also that airplane... Lots still have to happen, for sure.
