Chapter 2.15: The scout group

 <-- Previous Chapter

^Translation: Nacho defeated a wild squirrel in a hand to hand fight!

From Luna's diary

Today I went to sleep early, we are all working hard to settle in this new town but everything seemed to be fine. For sure I wasn't expecting to be woken up in the middle of the night by a weird noise in the garden, nor that it meant that I was about to be abducted again by one of those old spaceships used by the rebels.

Seriously, even here? I'm starting to lose track of the times I've been abducted by some moron piloting one of those old spaceships...

Luna: By now I thought it was clear that there isn't any need to abduct me like that to communicate with us.

Luna: By the way, who are you? What do you want from us?
???: We noticed the efforts you are putting in helping the other aliens from Mr S.'s absurd new laws, so we were wondering whether...
Luna: I have no intention of helping terrorists as you are, or of abducting innocent people on one of those prehistoric spaceships of yours. I treated a couple of you rebels at my hospitals, they got burnt with old plasma engines, are you at least able to repair the spaceships you are using?
???: Wait, let me at least explain, the point is...

Luna: The fault of all the alien-phobia among the earthlings is just yours, what do you think you are solving by continuing to use those spaceships and scare them? We'll never be able to live peacefully together this way, and more and more Mr S. will inevitably arrive!
???: Does pretending to be a happy human family seem like a solution to you instead? How long do you think it can last?
Luna: Hey! We are not...
???: Sixam technology is light years ahead of theirs, if only we were able to...
Luna: To do what? The original inhabitants of Sixam at least knew how to do their math, if they decided to leave the planet it is because it would be physically impossible for us to return here! You’re the deluded ones, not me!

Luna: Take me back home straight away, I'm not going to listen to any more of your nonsense!

At least those rebels didn't seem to be willing to harm their alien fellows, because he just nodded with resignation and obeyed.

Above all, I wondered how they knew about our transfer.  Apart from my brother and the few Hermes friends who helped us, no one else should know about it...

I shared my worried also with Hermes and the boys, but no one managed to untangle the puzzle. For now, we decided to go on with our original plan, and to be extra careful about any suspicious detail we could find from now on.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Going on with our normal life also means cooking cakes with a remarkable frequency, we often have something to celebrate.

You may be wondering whose birthday could we be celebrating today, my dear diary. Well, today it's Hermes's turn, and we decided to organize our first real birthday party since when we moved here.

He complains about his aching back more often than before, but he continues to be a very handsome man, don't you agree my dear diary?

We have also decided to invite our new neighbours, it seemed the right thing to do for integrating among the people of Winderbourg. I admit that I'm starting to miss Milo, Noemi and Celine, it's so strange to celebrate without them...

Overall it was a fun party, but we still decided to call Milo and his family on skype right when our guests left.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Meanwhile, the boys continue to lead a seemingly normal life. Leo and Aster have decided to join the scout group, and have convinced Orion to participate as well. They say that everything is fine, who knows if it's true.

From Leo's diary

Orion: Can someone remind me again why the heck I decided to join this scout-stuff too?
Aster: Com'on, it will be fun!

???: Hey Hello! You are the newcomers, aren't you?
Leo: Yes. We are Leonard, Orson and Alex.
???: Nice to meet you, my name is Sophia.

This scout group seems extremely open toward aliens, she is not the only one among them. At least here, they seem to feel accepted for who they are.

Sophia: the group leader is the girl over there instead, her name is Claire. She's a tough one.

Sophia: You might have already seen her at school. Everyone there calls her "Claire S.", but I advise you not to do it because she always goes on a rampage when she hears that name.
Aster: Claire S.? What a strange nickname...
Sophia: Oh, that's not a nickname. She is the youngest daughter of Mr S., and since her father likes so much to use only the initial of his surname someone decided to do the same with her.

My brothers and I exchanged a startled look for a moment: Mr S.'s daughter? Leading an obviously pro-alien scout group?

Sophia: (amused) She is just the opposite of her father, and she does not get along with him at all... Which is why she hates to be called Claire S., you see?

Claire: If you are done chatting, we have some graffiti to erase. Let's go!

Pro-aliens or not, if she really was Mr S.'s daughter we should have been even more careful in keeping a low profile and not getting noticed. We were definitively unlucky in meeting her, no doubt about it.

The graffiti to be erased was on top of the old ruined walls a few steps from a cliff by the sea. It took us almost an hour on foot to get there.

Claire: And now let's try to restore those walls to their original state!

Orion: How could anyone climb that wall just to paint that?

Needless to say, we came home very tired.

From Luna's diary

The boys seemed exhausted after the first afternoon with the scouts. They also made a few new friends, including...

Luna: in what sense "Mr S.'s daughter is in your scout group"?
Aster: She is not just part of the group, she is the leader.
Luna: (cautiously) ... maybe it's not a good idea for you to continue going there then, if she notices...
Orion: Leaving out of the blue would make you even more conspicuous, though.
Leo: Yes, I think we should at least finish the season.
Luna: But ...

We were interrupted by a loud meow in the courtyard, which made us all run out.

Amazonia had been meowing, her mom Papaia had just slumped to the ground. We knew she was old, but lately we've had so much to do that we end up neglecting her a bit...

Luna: (trying to stay calm) You are all glowing blue, the neighbours could notice it. We should go back inside.

In the following days, the saddest among us for our cat's departure was Hermes, he is the one closest to the felines of the house. He's trying to write as usual, but today he probably needs a hug more than working...

Meanwhile, the boys walked past us with the scout uniform on, their second meeting was about to begin.

From Leo's diary

We said goodbye to mom and dad in a hurry, we were running late already. This time we had to reach the lighthouse, a long walk from our place awaited us.

This time we hadn't planned any particular activity, the trip was just intended to enjoy the view over the sea.

Claire: You look tired, Leonard, are you okay?
Leo: (Yawling) Sorry, I didn't sleep well the last night. What about you, instead?
Claire: I always love coming here, the view is so nice!
Leo: Well, yeah, it's not bad.

Yes, the sea is beautiful, but sometimes I miss a bit the desert and the sand in Oasis Spring. But Claire didn't notice my nostalgia, because she just went straight on with what she was saying.

Claire: you are doing well, the other day you got rid of a whole graffiti all by yourself!
Leo: (shrugging) It wasn't that difficult.
Claire: And I'm also glad to see that you are integrating well into the group. (Chuckling) Especially your brother Alex, Roberta is with him all the time!

Claire: I'm also pleased to see that you don't seem to care about the aliens in the group! A couple of guys ditched right away just for that, can you believe it?
Leo : (surprised)  Seriously?
Claire: Some people are terribly afraid of aliens... But think about how many beautiful things we could be able to do if we learned a little of their technology! For example, they say they can teleport themselves to other planets, can you imagine how much our transport system would benefit from such innovative technology?

She seemed to really care about what she was saying, and to really like aliens. She almost seemed enlightened when talking about that topic.
Actually, there was probably something off with the light on top of that lighthouse, because I almost had the impression that...

Is it just my impression, or was she glowing?
